China’s technology giant Tencent has announced a major update that will allow PayPal users to make cashless payments across China through the extensive WeChat Pay merchant network. The move is expected to improve convenience for foreign tourists visiting China as the country continues expanding efforts to attract more international travelers.
According to Tencent, the new feature will first become available for PayPal users based in the United States before gradually expanding to additional international markets. Through this integration, travelers will be able to use PayPal accounts for QR code payments at millions of merchants connected to WeChat Pay across mainland China.
WeChat Pay, also known as Weixin Pay in mainland China, has become one of the country’s most widely used digital payment platforms. Along with Alibaba’s Alipay system, WeChat Pay dominates China’s rapidly growing cashless economy and is commonly used in taxis, restaurants, retail stores, transportation services, and tourist attractions.
Industry experts believe the partnership aligns with China’s broader strategy to encourage inbound tourism and improve payment accessibility for international visitors. Economists noted that many foreign travelers previously faced challenges using local digital payment systems because Chinese businesses increasingly rely on QR-based transactions instead of cash payments.
China has recently expanded visa-free entry policies for travelers from several countries including the United Kingdom, Spain, and Australia as part of efforts to revive tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic. Although U.S. travelers still require visas for most visits, officials hope simplified digital payment options will improve the travel experience for international visitors.
Tourism remains an important sector for China’s economy, contributing more than four percent of national economic output in recent years. Official data also shows that international visitor numbers have continued recovering strongly since border restrictions were lifted, with foreign arrivals surpassing pre-pandemic levels in 2025.
Tencent revealed that transactions made by foreign visitors through WeChat-linked international bank cards increased by nearly 80 percent during the first four months of the year. The company also announced a transaction fee waiver for first-time users linking international bank cards to WeChat Pay in order to encourage wider adoption of the service.
Analysts believe the direct impact on Tencent’s revenue may initially remain limited due to relatively low numbers of U.S. tourists traveling to China. However, experts say the integration represents an important step toward global interoperability between digital payment systems and reflects the growing trend of cross-border QR code payment partnerships worldwide.
