Fu Cong has urged a review of the decision to withdraw the United Nations peacekeeping mission from Lebanon, as tensions in the region continue to rise. He expressed concern while speaking at the United Nations headquarters in New York on May 2, 2026.
China’s statement comes at a time when the situation in Lebanon remains unstable despite a declared ceasefire. Fu Cong said that the current conditions do not reflect a true ceasefire and described it as a situation of reduced conflict rather than complete peace.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, widely known as UNIFIL, has been playing a key role in maintaining stability in southern Lebanon for decades. The mission was originally established to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli forces and later expanded after the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Last year, the United Nations Security Council decided to gradually withdraw UNIFIL forces, with the mission expected to end by December 2026. This decision is now being reconsidered by several countries due to the worsening security situation.
Fu Cong stated that many members of the Security Council believe it is not the right time to withdraw peacekeeping forces. He emphasized that the presence of UNIFIL remains important to maintain stability and prevent further escalation in the region.
The conflict in Lebanon has intensified in recent months, with continued air strikes and exchanges of fire. Reports suggest that thousands of people have lost their lives, and more than one million people have been displaced due to the violence.
UN peacekeepers have also faced serious risks during the conflict. Several personnel from different countries have been killed or injured while carrying out their duties. These include tasks such as clearing explosives and supporting humanitarian operations.
Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the attacks on peacekeepers, stating that they were performing essential duties when they came under fire. He called for greater protection for UN personnel in conflict zones.
China has indicated that it will wait for a detailed report from the United Nations before taking a final position. However, it has clearly expressed the need for careful reconsideration of the withdrawal decision in order to ensure peace and stability in the region.
