China’s top political advisory body has voted to remove three retired military generals from its ranks, state media reported, as part of an ongoing purge of senior military officials ahead of the country’s annual Two Sessions political meetings. The decision by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) comes a week after the legislature dismissed 19 delegates — including nine military officers — in related actions.
The female‑controlled Standing Committee of the CPPCC voted on Monday to strip retired Han Weiguo, Liu Lei and Gao Jin of their positions as political advisors, according to Chinese state media. In the same meeting, the advisory body also removed several other members and officially ousted 10 more.
The move follows a broader pattern of military reshuffles and dismissals in China’s armed forces as President Xi Jinping continues a sweeping anti‑corruption drive that has increasingly targeted high‑ranking military officials. Last week, the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee also removed 19 delegates, including nine from the military, before the National People's Congress convenes. No specific reasons were provided for the removals.
Observers say such removals at the highest levels of the military and political advisory bodies are unusual and reflect a deepening internal shake‑up within China’s leadership as the annual meetings — a major political event — approach. The Two Sessions, which include the NPC and the CPPCC, typically set the nation’s political and economic agenda and run for about a week in Beijing.
While Chinese authorities have not publicly detailed the reasons for each removal, analysts note that President Xi’s anti‑corruption campaign has increasingly focused on rooting out graft and ensuring political loyalty within the military over the past decade. This has included high‑profile investigations and dismissals of senior officers.
