Wang Yi is set to travel to New York City later this month to chair a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council, according to an announcement made by China’s foreign ministry. The diplomatic visit highlights Beijing’s continued engagement in major international discussions amid rising global geopolitical tensions.
The high-level Security Council meeting is scheduled to take place on May 26 and is expected to bring together representatives and foreign ministers from multiple countries. During his visit to New York, Wang Yi is also expected to hold meetings with Antonio Guterres and senior diplomats from various nations.
Chinese officials stated that the visit reflects China’s commitment to international cooperation and multilateral diplomacy through the United Nations platform. The discussions are expected to focus on global security, international conflicts and ongoing geopolitical challenges affecting multiple regions around the world.
Analysts believe Wang Yi’s appearance at the United Nations comes at an important moment as tensions continue to rise across several international fronts, including trade disputes, regional conflicts and global security concerns. China has increasingly positioned itself as a major diplomatic player in international negotiations and peace-related discussions.
Following his meetings in New York, Wang Yi will travel to Canada from May 28 to May 30 at the invitation of Canadian officials. The visit is expected to include discussions on bilateral relations, economic cooperation and broader diplomatic engagement between China and Canada.
Relations between Beijing and Ottawa have experienced several challenges in recent years due to political disagreements, trade disputes and security concerns. Experts believe the upcoming visit could provide an opportunity for both countries to improve communication and strengthen diplomatic dialogue.
The foreign ministry did not release further details regarding the exact agenda of Wang Yi’s meetings in Canada or the specific topics expected to be discussed during the UN Security Council session. However, the visits are being closely watched internationally as China continues expanding its diplomatic role on the global stage.
