China Accuses US of Distorting Defense Policy to Block India Ties

China Accuses US of Distorting Defense Policy to Block India Ties

Post by : Meena Ariff

China has accused the United States of deliberately misrepresenting its defense policies in an effort to undermine the recent improvements in China-India relations. The accusation came during a press briefing where Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded to questions about whether Beijing might exploit the easing of tensions along the disputed border with India to prevent closer ties between the US and India.

Lin Jian emphasized that China views its relationship with India from a long-term, strategic perspective and regards the border issue as a bilateral matter to be resolved only between the two countries. “We firmly object to any country passing judgment or interfering in this issue,” Lin said, underscoring China’s stance against external involvement.

The remarks were made in direct response to a recent Pentagon report which suggested that China is likely trying to capitalize on the decreased border tensions with India to stabilize bilateral relations and prevent the deepening of US-India ties. The report noted Beijing’s strategic interest in maintaining regional balance and limiting the influence of the US in South Asia.

China’s spokesperson reiterated that Beijing is committed to peaceful and stable relations with India, aiming to maintain a harmonious bilateral relationship based on mutual respect and cooperation. However, China remains wary of efforts by third parties to manipulate the situation for their geopolitical advantage.

The longstanding border dispute between China and India has often been a source of tension between the two Asian giants, with occasional clashes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). However, recent diplomatic and military efforts have led to a significant easing of tensions, opening the door to renewed dialogue and cooperation.

This shift has drawn attention from global powers, especially the United States, which has been deepening its strategic partnership with India amid growing concerns over China’s expanding regional influence. The Pentagon’s report reflects US concerns about China’s intentions in the region and its efforts to counterbalance Washington’s ties with New Delhi.

Experts suggest that while China seeks to maintain a peaceful border situation with India, it is simultaneously cautious of the US-India partnership, which it views as a challenge to its own strategic interests. This triangular relationship among China, India, and the US is shaping much of the geopolitical landscape in Asia.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community watches closely how these three major powers navigate their complex relationships, balancing cooperation, competition, and strategic interests in a rapidly changing global environment.
