China Pressures Thailand and Cambodia for Peace Talks and Ceasefire

China Pressures Thailand and Cambodia for Peace Talks and Ceasefire

Post by : Saif Rahman

China has urged Thailand and Cambodia to promptly reach a ceasefire agreement and restart discussions aimed at peacefully resolving their ongoing border tensions. Chinese Special Envoy for Asian Affairs, Deng Xijun, stressed that prioritizing the cessation of hostilities is crucial for both countries.

In the last three weeks, hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified, with exchanges of rockets and artillery fire along their 817-kilometer border. This resurgence of conflict follows the collapse of a truce initially facilitated by Malaysia, while ASEAN chair and former U.S. President Donald Trump played a role as well. Thousands have been displaced, leaving local populations struggling to find essential food and shelter amid the chaos.

China, alongside other ASEAN diplomats, has called for restraint and immediate action to cease fighting. Deng Xijun has undertaken shuttle diplomacy, visiting both nations to meet with prime ministers and key officials. He expressed China’s readiness to provide a dialogue platform and support mediation efforts.

In a positive development, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to convene defense officials on Wednesday to explore the possibility of renewing the ceasefire. This initiative has been commended by ASEAN, which is committed to finding peaceful resolutions for regional conflicts.

China identifies itself as a “friend” and “close neighbor” to both nations, aiming to mediate in a balanced manner. Reports from Chinese state media have underscored the nation’s past successes in mediation, notably in the reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia last year. Beijing’s strategy seeks to tone down tensions and foster a conducive environment for negotiations.

The Chinese government reiterated its support for ASEAN’s initiatives and expressed readiness to help create a peaceful atmosphere. By promoting dialogue without expressly referencing the previous Trump-mediated agreement, China aims to uphold its credibility and neutrality as a mediator.

The ongoing territorial disputes between Thailand and Cambodia highlight deeper historical sensitivities in the region. Experts note that strategic diplomacy and continuous dialogue are essential to averting further violence and safeguarding civilians impacted by the ongoing clashes.

China’s proactive stance in advocating for ceasefire discussions indicates its commitment to regional stability and its eagerness to facilitate peaceful conflict resolution. Both Thailand and Cambodia now have a crucial chance to bring an end to the violence and work towards a sustainable solution to their border disagreements.
