Massive Fire at Chevron El Segundo Refinery in Los Angeles Contained

Massive Fire at Chevron El Segundo Refinery in Los Angeles Contained

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Los Angeles, California – A large fire erupted at Chevron’s oil refinery in El Segundo, LA County, lighting up the night sky and sending plumes of smoke over the area on Thursday. Videos shared by local residents showed towering flames and a loud, extended rumble from the refinery, which is the largest on the US West Coast.

The blaze began suddenly, and neither Chevron nor local authorities have confirmed the cause of the fire. Authorities in El Segundo urged residents to stay indoors as firefighters worked to control the situation.

Despite the dramatic visuals, LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell confirmed that the fire was contained to one section of the refinery. She reassured residents that no evacuations were necessary and there was no immediate threat to public safety. “It has been contained, and there is no cause for alarm for El Segundo or the surrounding areas,” Mitchell said.

California Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed about the incident, and his office stated that they were coordinating with local and state agencies to protect the community and ensure public safety.

The Chevron El Segundo refinery is a critical facility, processing more than 276,000 barrels of crude oil daily, including gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Covering approximately 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometres), the refinery has over 1,100 miles (1,770 kilometres) of pipelines and has been operational since 1911, making it California’s second-largest oil refinery.

Residents in nearby areas, including those attending local events, reported heavy smoke and disruption. Mike Rogers, an LA resident, described the scene, saying, “I thought we got nuked or something,” after a soccer match in the area was canceled due to the smoke.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring the blaze remains contained and that the surrounding community stays safe.
