New Drone Initiative by US Central Command Targets Iran's Shahed Drones

New Drone Initiative by US Central Command Targets Iran's Shahed Drones

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Dubai: The United States has introduced a new drone task force in the Middle East, indicating a significant change in its regional defense approach. Task Force Scorpion Strike is now under the direct supervision of US Central Command (CENTCOM) and oversees America’s pioneering operational squadron of one-way attack drones aimed at countering Iran’s burgeoning unmanned technology.

CENTCOM made this announcement on Wednesday, highlighting it as a critical advancement towards adapting to an evolving battlefield defined by budget-friendly, long-range drones. This new fleet, referred to as the Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS), is engineered based on insights gained from a reverse-engineered Iranian Shahed drone, along with its launch techniques and airframe.

The outcome is a 10-foot autonomous unit designed closely to mimic the infamous Shahed-136 but emphasizes US-grade reliability in manufacturing. Each LUCAS drone is estimated to cost around $35,000, significantly lower than the price tags of traditional interceptors that often reach millions.

Transforming the Drone Landscape

Iran’s Shahed-136 drones have altered conflict dynamics from the Red Sea to Ukraine by deploying in swarms, stressing air-defense capabilities. Over the last two years, Iranian-backed militias have persistently targeted US forces stationed in Iraq, Syria, and Jordan, while Houthi fighters have engaged in drone and missile strikes on commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

The urgency escalated in 2024 when Iran launched nearly 170 drones towards Israel, prompting extensive interception efforts from US and allied forces. Such encounters have hastened the Pentagon's transition towards adopting cost-effective systems capable of managing large-scale threats.

LUCAS drones are designed for independent, extended missions and can be deployed using catapults, rocket-assist systems, or mobile vehicles for quick setup across varied terrains. CENTCOM has refrained from disclosing the current fleet size, stating only that “many” drones are operational in the area, with more units expected soon.

Establishment of the Task Force

Task Force Scorpion Strike comprises nearly 20 personnel, several of whom hail from US Special Operations Command–Central. Not all members are stationed forward in the field, and the precise location of the squadron is classified due to security considerations.

This move comes four months after CENTCOM ramped up the acquisition of budget-friendly unmanned systems, acknowledging that adversaries' cost-effective attack drones were outpacing traditional, pricier US weaponry. Through the introduction of LUCAS, Washington is signaling a strategic shift: tackling low-cost threats with affordable solutions.

The formation of this new squadron highlights a broad transition in modern warfare, where the strategic balance is increasingly influenced by not just precision, but also cost-effectiveness, volume, and adaptability.
