A tragic accident struck a waste segregation facility in Cebu City after a huge pile of garbage and debris suddenly collapsed, burying workers under tons of rubbish. The incident resulted in one confirmed death, multiple injuries, and dozens of people still unaccounted for, according to authorities.
The collapse occurred at a landfill site in the Binaliw area, where emergency teams worked through the night to rescue trapped individuals. At least eight people were pulled out alive, but one female worker later died while being taken to the hospital. Several others sustained injuries and are receiving medical care.
Conflicting reports emerged regarding the number of missing persons. Police initially reported at least 27 workers still trapped, while city officials later said the number could be higher. The exact figures remain unclear as rescue operations continue and information from the site remains limited due to poor communication signals.
Mayor Nestor Archival assured the public that all emergency teams are fully mobilized and following strict safety measures. He emphasized the city government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and support for affected families.
The landfill, operated by a private waste management firm, processes around 1,000 tons of garbage daily and employs more than 100 workers. Several office and administrative buildings at the site were reportedly crushed under the weight of the collapsing trash mound, which was estimated to be as tall as a four-storey building.
Authorities said weather conditions were dry at the time of the incident, and the cause of the collapse remains under investigation. An emergency meeting involving city officials and landfill management was scheduled to assess the situation and determine next steps.
Rescue teams continue to dig through the debris in hopes of finding survivors, while families anxiously wait for updates on their loved ones.
