Brown University Shooting Suspect Caught on Camera in New Footage

Brown University Shooting Suspect Caught on Camera in New Footage

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Authorities investigating the deadly shooting at Brown University over the weekend have released new footage of the suspected gunman, hoping to gather information from the public. The FBI and local police shared three new videos showing the man wearing a mask and a dark two-tone jacket, offering the clearest images yet of the suspect, despite his face remaining hidden.

The attack, which took place in a first-floor classroom during a study session, left two students dead and nine others wounded. Authorities said the suspect is approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a stocky build, and they have offered a $50,000 reward for any information leading to his identification, arrest, and conviction. Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez appealed to the public to come forward with tips or video evidence that might help locate the shooter.

Law enforcement officers have been actively searching neighborhoods near Brown University, knocking on doors, checking security cameras, and scouring yards for any evidence. U.S. marshals have also been assisting in the investigation. The sudden release of a previously detained person of interest on Sunday marked a setback for investigators, as questions emerged about campus security and the availability of surveillance footage.

Among the victims were 19-year-old Ella Cook, a sophomore and vice president of the Brown College Republicans from Birmingham, Alabama, and 18-year-old MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a freshman from Uzbekistan studying biochemistry and neuroscience. Cook was described by her pastor as a bright and grounded young woman who inspired those around her. Umurzokov’s family shared that he had overcome childhood neurological challenges to achieve his academic goals. The remaining wounded students are in varying conditions, with one in critical care and others stable but recovering.

The shooting occurred during final exam preparations, causing widespread panic on campus as students scrambled for safety. Some students, like Spencer Yang, an 18-year-old freshman from New York, described being shot in the leg while trying to protect others. The university lifted the lockdown on Sunday, though some colleges and universities in Rhode Island and across the Ivy League have since increased security measures. Yale University, for example, announced heightened security for upcoming Hanukkah celebrations.

The tragedy has sparked concerns over campus safety and security protocols. Students and residents have expressed frustration over the lack of surveillance and security measures that might have prevented or minimized the attack. Investigators are still working to determine how the gunman accessed the building and to trace his movements in the hours before and after the shooting. Authorities emphasized that steady progress is being made in the investigation and continue to ask the public for cooperation.

The Brown University shooting has prompted a renewed focus on security across schools in the United States, highlighting the need for better protective measures and surveillance to safeguard students and staff from similar incidents.
