A blast hit a mosque while worshippers were engaged in evening prayers in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno state, on Wednesday, a witness reported. The explosion sparked panic among attendees who were gathering for prayers. Latest updates do not provide official info regarding the number of injuries or fatalities.
For nearly two decades, Maiduguri has been plagued by violence connected to Islamist militancy. The city has frequently been targeted by Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which have attacked civilians, places of worship, and marketplaces.
Witnesses recounted that the explosion occurred abruptly during the praying session, sending shockwaves throughout the mosque. Emergency services quickly arrived, transporting the wounded to local hospitals. Visuals from a nearby medical facility depicted victims being treated, although officials have yet to disclose concrete casualty numbers.
As of now, no organization has claimed responsibility for the assault. Nonetheless, similar incidents in Maiduguri are often attributed to extremist groups functioning within northeastern Nigeria. These groups customarily employ suicide bombers and improvised explosives to instill fear and disrupt everyday life.
Boko Haram initiated its insurgency in Borno state in 2009, with the objective of enforcing its strict interpretation of Islamic governance. Since that time, the ongoing conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced millions. Despite numerous military efforts by Nigerian forces and collaboration with neighboring nations, complete eradication of the insurgency remains elusive.
In recent years, security conditions in Maiduguri have improved from the peak of the violence. However, incidents like this reinforce that civilians are still vulnerable. Places of worship—expected to be havens—continue to be at risk, amplifying the anxieties of local residents.
Authorities have pledged to probe the explosion and enhance security measures around religious and communal areas. For many in Maiduguri, this attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing instability and the protracted struggle against violence in northeastern Nigeria.
