Drone Scare Halts Flights at Berlin Airport for Two Hours

Drone Scare Halts Flights at Berlin Airport for Two Hours

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Flights were temporarily suspended at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on Friday evening following unidentified drone sightings, sparking fresh concerns over Germany’s growing drone threat.

According to an airport spokesperson, all take-offs and landings were halted between 8:08 pm and 9:58 pm (local time) after multiple drones were spotted near the airport’s airspace. The incident forced the diversion of “a whole series of flights” to other German cities, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

To minimize disruption, Berlin authorities relaxed the night flight ban, allowing delayed departures after normal operating hours. “We assume that the danger has been averted for the time being,” the airport spokesperson said, confirming that operations had resumed safely by late evening.

This latest Berlin drone scare follows a string of similar incidents across Europe, including at airports in Denmark, Norway, and Poland. Officials in Romania and Estonia have accused Russia of orchestrating such disruptions — allegations Moscow has dismissed.

German leaders have been increasingly vocal about the national security risk posed by drones, particularly after multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sightings over military bases and critical infrastructure. Earlier in October, Munich Airport faced two shutdowns in a single day due to drone activity, disrupting thousands of travelers.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called for stronger countermeasures, emphasizing the need for new technologies to detect, assess, and neutralize drones. “Germany must find new responses to this hybrid threat,” he said.

Germany, a key NATO supporter of Ukraine, has also pointed to potential foreign interference, heightening concerns over the use of drones for espionage or sabotage.

Authorities are now investigating Friday’s Berlin incident as part of a broader strategy to strengthen airport security and prevent further drone-related disruptions across the country
