The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has opened its inaugural international branch in Abu Dhabi, establishing a significant milestone for specialized healthcare offerings in the UAE.
This opening comes after a recent announcement by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, emphasizing the emirate's goal to become a leading global destination for advanced medical services. The new institute will provide top-level diagnostic assessments and surgical solutions across various ophthalmology fields.
To celebrate the launch, Her Excellency Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, toured the facility with senior DoH officials and representatives from Bascom Palmer, both from the U.S. and Abu Dhabi. The visit showcased the institute’s specialized diagnostic amenities, cutting-edge surgical rooms, and patient-centered workflows aimed at delivering high-quality care efficiently.
Dr Al Ghaithi remarked that the opening signifies Abu Dhabi's ongoing dedication to providing exceptional healthcare for local residents and international visitors alike. The partnership fosters clinical excellence, promotes knowledge sharing, and supports the emirate’s vision of a comprehensive and innovative healthcare system capable of addressing future demands.
Situated in Mohamed Bin Zayed City, this 70,000-square-foot facility enhances the specialized eye care network in Abu Dhabi. It provides refractive and laser treatments, advanced surgical options, and a range of ophthalmic services catering to both routine and complex cases.
Dr Abdul Rahim Jaffar, a Board Member of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi, acknowledged the UAE's leadership for its forward-thinking vision in creating a world-class healthcare environment. He noted that the new institute exemplifies robust global collaboration, offering patients in the UAE and the surrounding region access to superior standards in care, education, and research.
Dr Dipen J Parekh, CEO of the University of Miami Health System, mentioned that the Abu Dhabi location is facilitating smoother transitions of care from the Miami network. This synergy is critical for ensuring continuity and enabling joint data-driven enhancements in quality and outcomes.
Dr Zain Kenderian, CEO of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi, highlighted that the center’s digital tools, clinical guidelines, and scheduling systems have been customized to address the diverse needs of Abu Dhabi’s population. The main goal has been to ensure efficient patient experiences while upholding the high-quality standards that have made Bascom Palmer a leading name in U.S. ophthalmology.
Clinical leadership also shared that treatment guidelines from Miami have been modified to resonate with local patient demographics, assuring that care methodologies are both globally recognized and locally applicable. Initial focus areas include retinal, corneal, oncologic, and pediatric ophthalmology, meeting immediate demand while establishing a long-term specialized capacity in the region.
The inauguration of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Abu Dhabi reinforces the city’s stature as a regional authority in clinical excellence. It significantly reduces the necessity for patients to travel extensive distances for specialized eye care, providing comprehensive support services such as visa assistance, concierge services, and structured recovery packages for GCC and international patients.
With the commencement of its operations, the institute marks a vital enhancement to Abu Dhabi’s healthcare landscape, setting a new standard for specialized ophthalmic care in the Middle East.
