Artemis II Crew Begins Return Journey to Earth

Artemis II Crew Begins Return Journey to Earth

Post by : Shakul

Astronauts from NASA’s Artemis II mission have begun their journey back to Earth after completing a historic crewed trip around the Moon, marking humanity’s return to deep space exploration after more than 50 years.

The crew, consisting of Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, are traveling aboard the Orion spacecraft, named “Integrity,” toward an expected splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near Southern California.

The final phase of the mission involves the Orion capsule separating from its service module before reentering Earth’s atmosphere. During this process, communication with the spacecraft will be briefly interrupted for about six minutes due to intense heat and plasma formation.

The spacecraft will face extreme conditions during reentry, traveling at speeds of around 40,235 kilometers per hour. Temperatures outside the capsule are expected to reach nearly 2,760 degrees Celsius, testing the durability of Orion’s heat shield.

NASA engineers have adjusted the reentry trajectory following earlier concerns during a 2022 test flight, when the heat shield experienced unexpected stress. These changes aim to reduce heat buildup and ensure a safer return for the crew.

The mission, launched on April 1 from Cape Canaveral using the powerful Space Launch System rocket, took astronauts farther into space than any human mission in decades. The crew reached a distance of over 252,756 miles from Earth, surpassing the Apollo 13 record set in 1970.

If successful, the mission will conclude with a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, marking a major milestone in NASA’s Artemis program and paving the way for future human missions to the Moon and beyond.
