Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that education and healthcare will remain top priorities for Malaysia, even as the country faces mounting pressure from the ongoing global energy crisis.
Speaking at a meet-and-greet session with students and alumni in Kuala Kangsar on April 4, Anwar stressed that the government will not compromise on the quality of education or essential public services. He said smaller-scale projects related to schools and healthcare facilities will be fast-tracked, while larger developments may take more time due to their scale.
The assurance comes at a time when Malaysia, like many countries, is grappling with rising fuel prices and economic uncertainty triggered by global conflicts, particularly in the Middle East. These tensions have disrupted supply chains and driven up energy costs worldwide, affecting domestic economies.
Anwar highlighted that many nations are being forced to divert funds toward security amid geopolitical tensions, often at the expense of education. He warned that neglecting education would have long-term consequences on future generations.
To manage the crisis, the Malaysian government has already taken several steps, including coordinating with state leaders to ensure energy supply stability and protect citizens from price shocks. Authorities are focusing on controlling inflation, maintaining fuel availability, and safeguarding public welfare through targeted support measures.
In addition, the government recently announced work-from-home measures for public sector employees starting mid-April to reduce national energy consumption and ease pressure on resources.
Despite the challenges, Anwar expressed confidence in Malaysia’s resilience, stating that the government’s policies are guided by data and aimed at balancing economic stability with public welfare.
He reiterated that investing in education and healthcare remains essential to ensure long-term national development, even during periods of global uncertainty.
