At a recent event at the Vatican, Chris Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, emphasized that the evolution of artificial intelligence should not solely lie in the hands of tech companies. He advocated for enhanced oversight from governments, religious authorities, and civil organizations.
During the unveiling of Pope Leo’s inaugural encyclical addressing artificial intelligence, Olah expressed concerns regarding significant job losses potentially resulting from AI advancements. He warned that numerous roles might be supplanted by automated systems.
He underlined that if widespread job displacement occurs, it would create a pressing ethical duty for society to support those affected.
Olah noted that AI companies often face intense commercial, political, and personal influences that can clash with societal welfare. These pressures can impede companies from prioritizing public interest, even when researchers harbor benevolent aspirations. Consequently, he deemed external regulation essential.
Anthropic, the U.S.-based firm behind the Claude AI system, has previously encountered tensions with regulatory bodies concerning policies restricting military-oriented AI applications, such as autonomous weaponization and surveillance.
Olah commended the Catholic Church's engagement in AI dialogues, arguing that the ethical dilemmas surrounding AI extend beyond mere technology.
He identified three pivotal areas of concern: the peril of substantial job reductions, the imperative that AI's advantages are equitably distributed, and the daunting task of grasping the complexities of advanced AI systems.
Moreover, he pointed out that the concentration of AI development in affluent nations exacerbates global inequality, prompting questions about ensuring benefits are shared more equitably worldwide.
This occasion represented a notable convergence of the tech industry and the Catholic Church, as both sectors deliberate on the ethical and social ramifications of rapid advancements in artificial intelligence.
