Anthony Geary, the legendary actor best known for his iconic role as Luke Spencer on the long-running soap opera General Hospital, has passed away at the age of 78. Geary died on Sunday, December 14, following complications from surgery, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades in daytime television. His husband, Claudio Gama, shared the devastating news, saying, “It was a shock for me and our families and our friends. For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”

Geary first brought the character of Luke Spencer to life in 1978 and became a cornerstone of General Hospital for nearly four decades. Luke’s on-screen romance with Laura Collins, played by Genie Francis, became one of the most beloved storylines in soap opera history. Their wedding episode in 1981 drew a staggering 30 million viewers, making it the most-watched episode in daytime television history and cementing Luke and Laura as the ultimate soap opera couple.

Though Geary retired from full-time work on General Hospital in 2015, he reprised the role occasionally, with his last appearance in 2017. After retiring, he moved from Los Angeles to Amsterdam and married Claudio Gama in 2020, marking a new chapter in his personal life.

The impact of Geary’s career on television was profound. General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini expressed deep sorrow, saying he and the “entire General Hospital family” are heartbroken over his passing. Fans around the world mourned the loss of an actor who not only shaped a genre but also created some of the most unforgettable moments in television history.

Anthony Geary’s portrayal of Luke Spencer remains a defining moment in soap opera history, leaving a lasting legacy on both the show and its millions of fans worldwide. His contributions to daytime television will be remembered for generations, celebrating a career built on passion, talent, and an enduring connection with viewers.
