Alisha Chinai Reveals 1996 Case Against Anu Malik and Industry Isolation

Alisha Chinai Reveals 1996 Case Against Anu Malik and Industry Isolation

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Singer Alisha Chinai recently spoke about her 1996 sexual harassment case against music composer Anu Malik, shedding light on the professional challenges she faced after taking legal action. The “Made In India” singer revealed that after filing the case, she was isolated by the music industry, and many work opportunities stopped coming her way.

Alisha shared that she was initially hesitant to take action, but her then-husband and manager, Rajesh, encouraged her to speak up. “I wasn’t inclined to take legal action at first. But my husband Rajesh supported me, and I decided to stand up,” she said in an interview with Zoom.

She explained that during the time of the case, most of her songs were composed by Anu Malik, and once the legal matter became public, much of her professional work dried up. Alisha expressed disappointment over the lack of support from the industry. “A lot of my work just stopped. But I told myself, forget it. It didn’t bother me that they isolated me,” she added.

Despite the past, Alisha and Anu Malik later reunited professionally. In 2003, they collaborated on the film Ishq Vishk and also served as judges on Indian Idol. The singer mentioned that their reconciliation happened after Anu Malik personally apologized and admitted that he had crossed the line.

Years later, during the #MeToo movement in 2018, several women accused Anu Malik of similar misconduct. Many reached out to Alisha for support. She said she was initially hesitant but eventually backed their claims, encouraging other women to speak up.

Alisha Chinai is a popular Bollywood and Indipop singer who rose to fame in the 1990s. She is widely regarded as one of the early icons of the Indipop movement. Her 1995 hit Made In India became a nationwide sensation, and she has collaborated with notable music composers, including Anu Malik, Bappi Lahiri, and Rajesh Roshan. Over the years, she has delivered several memorable songs in Bollywood and pop albums, establishing herself as one of India’s most recognizable voices.
