The Ajman Department of Municipal Affairs and Planning has made significant strides in environmental preservation in 2026, enhancing its commitment to sustainability and improving overall ecological performance in the emirate.
In the first quarter of the year, the Department reported impressive outcomes in both air quality and waste management, aligning with its long-term environmental objectives. These goals focus on minimizing pollution, moving towards carbon neutrality, safeguarding biodiversity, and developing integrated waste systems as part of the Ajman 2030 vision.
Dr. Eng. Khalid Maeen Al Hosani, the Executive Director of the Public Health and Environment Sector, noted that ongoing collaboration and enhanced coordination have been essential for upgrading monitoring mechanisms and environmental inspections. He emphasized improved management of oil and grease waste, alongside initiatives designed to enhance compliance among local businesses.
According to recent statistics, Ajman recorded a remarkable 97.60% of days with fine air quality during the first quarter of 2026. This indicates effective measures have been taken to cut down on pollution, particularly in urban environments. Meanwhile, the indicator for properly treated waste improved to 25%, highlighting advancements in waste management practices and commitment to ecological standards.
Collection of oil and grease waste showed a significant rise when compared to 2025. January saw a collection of 232,411 gallons, increasing from 101,642 gallons the previous year. February witnessed 210,872 gallons, up from 80,761 gallons, while March accounted for 85,270 gallons, rising from 34,866 gallons. These improvements, which ranged from 129% to 161%, were facilitated by a new electronic system, enhanced data accuracy, expanded coverage, and stricter inspection protocols.
As part of its sustainability strategies, the Department introduced the “Carbon-Zero Schools” initiative, with 60 schools participating in the first quarter. This includes 20 public and 40 private institutions. Workshops to raise awareness among students have been held, and a dedicated committee will oversee the initiative’s implementation.
Inspection activities saw intensification, with 500 inspections conducted since January, targeting facilities managing chemicals, oils, and other operations with high environmental impact to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
Furthermore, the Department is advancing critical projects, including a waste sorting line at the transfer station, capable of processing over 500 tonnes daily. This innovation aims to enhance recycling rates and diminish landfill waste. Other projects emphasize sewage sludge treatment, hazardous waste management, and studies on waste-to-energy, all contributing to a circular economy model.
Officials pointed out that these accomplishments mirror the progressive enhancements in Ajman's environmental framework driven by effective policies and targeted initiatives. The Department remains dedicated to fostering partnerships with both public and private sectors to cultivate a cleaner, more sustainable future.
