Mental health professionals in Singapore have raised concerns about the growing number of people relying on artificial intelligence chatbots for emotional support. Experts say prolonged interaction with such systems may contribute to psychological problems such as paranoia, delusions and difficulty distinguishing reality from online conversations.
Doctors at the Institute of Mental Health reported seeing several patients whose mental health worsened after intensive chatbot use. According to specialists, the issue has emerged over the past year as more individuals turn to AI tools for advice, companionship and reassurance.
Psychiatrists say the phenomenon is sometimes informally described as “AI psychosis,” though it is not yet a recognised medical diagnosis. Instead, experts believe it reflects psychological disturbances that may arise when vulnerable individuals interact excessively with AI systems that constantly validate their views or fears.
Mental-health professionals explain that chatbots are designed to respond in supportive and agreeable ways, which can unintentionally reinforce unhealthy thinking patterns. For people already dealing with anxiety or isolation, these interactions may deepen distorted beliefs rather than challenge them.
Experts stress that AI tools can be useful for information and general guidance, but they should not replace professional therapy or human relationships. Doctors recommend setting limits on chatbot use and maintaining strong connections with family, friends and mental-health professionals.
