The death of Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, an Afghan asylum seeker in the United States, has triggered widespread outrage and calls for an independent investigation after he died less than 24 hours after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Paktyawal, 41, was reportedly taken into custody on March 13 in Texas while dropping his children at school. According to his family, he was a healthy father of six who had worked alongside US forces in Afghanistan before relocating to the United States after the 2021 withdrawal.
Death Raises Serious Questions
ICE stated that Paktyawal complained of chest pain and breathing issues while in custody and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died despite medical efforts. However, advocacy groups argue that his sudden death raises serious concerns about detainee care and treatment.
Activists, including members of AfghanEvac, said it is highly unusual for a healthy individual to die within hours of detention, calling the incident a possible “failure of duty of care” by authorities.
Background and Service History
Paktyawal reportedly served as an Afghan special forces soldier and worked alongside US military personnel for years. Supporters say he was legally present in the US and building a life for his family.
Despite ICE describing him as a “criminal illegal alien” over past allegations, advocates pointed out that he was never formally charged or convicted, questioning the narrative presented by authorities.
Wider Immigration Policy Concerns
The incident comes amid stricter immigration enforcement under Donald Trump administration, which has expanded detention and deportation efforts. Reports indicate that the number of detainees in ICE facilities has risen significantly in recent months.
Human rights groups warn that Afghan refugees, including those who supported US operations, are increasingly affected by these policies. Calls for accountability are growing, with organisations demanding a full and transparent investigation into Paktyawal’s death.
