A 6.2-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Wednesday, November 5, the country's geophysical agency reported. The tremor took place offshore and did not result in a tsunami alert.
The event follows another notable shock earlier this week: a 6.6-magnitude tremor in the Banda Sea near the Maluku Islands, recorded at an approximate depth of 137 kilometres. Officials said neither of the recent quakes produced a tsunami threat.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where several major tectonic plates converge, making the archipelago especially prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. This geological setting keeps seismic risk high across the region.
Home to more than 270 million people spread across thousands of islands, Indonesia has a history of deadly seismic disasters. In January 2021 a 6.2-magnitude quake in Sulawesi caused over 100 deaths and widespread displacement. In 2018 a 7.5-magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami devastated Palu, killing more than 2,200 people. The 2004 Aceh earthquake and tsunami, at magnitude 9.1, remained the deadliest in recent memory, claiming over 170,000 lives in Indonesia alone.
Authorities said Wednesday's quake did not cause major visible damage but continue to monitor the area for aftershocks and urged residents to remain cautious in the days ahead.
