Moderate 5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Tajikistan-Xinjiang Border

Post by : Meena Ariff

A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck the Tajikistan-Xinjiang border region early Friday morning, according to official seismic data. The quake occurred around 2 a.m. local time at a depth of approximately 159 kilometers, as recorded by the Pakistan Meteorological Department. Meanwhile, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported the tremor at a magnitude of 5.3 with a depth of 140 kilometers, based on the Moment Magnitude scale.

The seismic activity was felt across a broad area, including parts of Pakistan such as Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as neighboring regions in China and Afghanistan. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the widespread tremors. Despite the intensity, no immediate reports of injuries, casualties, or structural damage have emerged from any affected areas.

Authorities have assured the public that they are closely monitoring the situation and have implemented precautionary measures to maintain safety. Residents have been advised to stay alert but remain calm as emergency teams stand ready to respond if necessary. The event serves as a reminder of the region’s seismic activity, and officials continue to emphasize preparedness in earthquake-prone zones.
