A new benchmark in mountain climbing was established as 274 climbers, with three from India, reached Mount Everest's peak in one day from Nepal. Nepalese officials confirmed this unprecedented accomplishment, marking it as the highest number of climbers to ascend the world's tallest peak in a single day via the southern route. The previous record was 223 climbers in 2019.
Thanks to favorable weather, climbers were able to complete their ascent to the 8,848.86-meter summit. Mount Everest, straddling the border of Nepal and China's Tibet, draws hundreds of adventurers each year during May's climbing window. This season, with China's route closed, the southern path in Nepal became the focal point for expeditions.
Among those who successfully summited were three Indian climbers, joining a diverse group of mountaineers. Nepal granted nearly 500 climbing permits this season, including many for Indian teams. Authorities indicated that more climbers might still ascend before the season wraps up later in the month.
The influx of climbers raised concerns regarding congestion in Everest's perilous "death zone," where oxygen scarcity is a significant risk. Reports from the mountain depicted long queues of climbers approaching the summit. However, some expedition specialists noted that effective planning, weather management, and adequate oxygen supplies helped prevent serious incidents during this record-setting day.
This climbing season has produced several personal milestones. Renowned Nepali Sherpa guide Kami Rita Sherpa broke his own record by reaching Everest's summit for the 32nd time. Another experienced climber, Pasang Dawa Sherpa, celebrated his 30th successful summit. Additionally, veteran climber Lhakpa Sherpa marked her 11th ascend, the most by any female in history.
Despite its perils, Mount Everest remains a major attraction for climbers worldwide, luring adventurers with its extreme conditions and soaring heights. The Nepalese government benefits greatly from the fees associated with climbing permits and tourism related to the mountain. Officials are now expected to convene to address climber safety, the prevention of overcrowding, and the implementation of stricter regulations for future expeditions.
