A disturbing episode unfolded at a tyre manufacturing plant in central Japan on Friday, injuring 15 employees and prompting an urgent response from emergency services and law enforcement. A 38-year-old male suspect was arrested on-site for supposedly stabbing several workers and hurling a chemical, believed to be bleach.
This attack took place at a facility run by Yokohama Rubber Co. in Mishima, located in Shizuoka prefecture, to the west of Tokyo. The facility primarily produces tyres for trucks and buses.
Injuries and Medical Responses
Local fire services reported that eight employees were transported to hospitals with stab wounds, five of whom are in critical condition. Additionally, seven people sustained injuries from the chemical during the incident. All patients are currently under medical care.
Emergency responders from the Fujisan Nanto Fire Department were among the initial teams on the scene, ensuring the area was secure and providing immediate medical attention before moving the victims to nearby hospitals.
Immediate Arrest of the Suspect
Authorities in Shizuoka stated that the suspect was detained inside the factory almost immediately after the assault commenced. He is under suspicion of attempted murder. Investigators have not revealed a potential motive, nor established whether the man was affiliated with the company.
Officials from the Associated Press reported ongoing interrogations as detectives piece together the events leading up to the attack and the suspect’s background.
Details on Attack Gear
Media reports, particularly from Asahi newspaper, disclosed alarming information about the attack. The suspect was reportedly armed with a survival knife and was seen wearing a gas mask. Forensic investigations are underway to clarify the nature of the chemical used; initial assessments suggest bleach was involved.
Factory Secured, Investigation Underway
Following the assault, police have secured the factory to eliminate further risks to the remaining staff members. Officers are gathering evidence, analyzing surveillance footage, and conducting witness interviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of the incident.
Authorities have confirmed that no other injuries occurred after apprehending the suspect. Factory operations have been suspended as a precaution, and employees were evacuated while safety assessments were completed.
No Detailed Statement Yet from Company
Yokohama Rubber Co. has acknowledged the event but has not released a comprehensive public statement. The company is expected to fully cooperate with investigative authorities and assist affected personnel and their families.
Concerns Over Workplace Safety on the Rise
This violent event has sparked renewed discussions about workplace safety and emergency response in Japan, especially in the wake of recent incidents involving chemical hazards and mass injuries. Officials have emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public but encourage companies to assess and enhance their security protocols.
Authorities will continue to provide updates as the investigation develops and more information surfaces.
